Tripura court awards death to two rapists

Thursday, 24 September 2015 | PNS | Guwahati

A month after Tripura Assembly adopted a resolution to end the death sentence, a court in the Northeastern State on Wednesday awarded death sentence to two accused in a rape and murder case.
Last month, the Tripura Assembly has unanimously passed a resolution to request the Central Government to amend Section 302 of the IPC to abolish capital punishment. Congress legislator, Jiten Sarkar moved it under the Private Members’ resolution and argued that at least 149 countries of the world have abolished death penalty while only 58 countries have been practicing it.

However, the Court of Additional Session Judge of Kamalpur on Wednesday awarded death sentence besides life imprisonment and penalty to Rashida Tripura (25) and Jhani Tripura (20) for raping and killing a minor girl in February last year. According to the case details, the two accused had raped the minor girl on February 7 and dumped her body in a nearby jungle. During the police investigation, the two accused were found to be involved in the crime and were nabbed under 366(A)/ 376(D)/ 302/ 120B of the IPC and Section 4 of POCSO Act, 2012.
