Two contract killers get capital punishment (Uttar Pradesh)

KANPUR: Two ' supari' (contract) killers were awarded death sentence along with a fine of Rs 1 lakh each by additional district sessions judge Mamta Gupta on Tuesday for committing murder. Chand Babu and Sharif Ahmad are both residents of Kuli Bazaar and have been convicted of killing one Ashok Sabbarwal in Swarup Nagar in 2004. The presiding judge in her order clearly observed that killing any innocent person for money was a menace for the society .The apex court in several of its judgement had observed that death sentence could be awarded where accused was menace for the existence of the society. 

' Supari' killing could not be allowed as profession in the society. It was judiciary's duty to provide security and peacefull atmosphere to the society. The accused had committed a serious offence hence death sentence was being awarded to them. They should hang from neck till their death, the judge observed in her order. The judicial official in her order further observed that her order be sent immediately to high court for ratification of death sentence. She in her judgment stated that the accused had taken contract of Rs 1 lakh to kill Ashok Sabbarwal, an ice trader. According to additional district government counsel Pradeep Bajpai, the report of murder was lodged by two constables, who were on picket duty near Chat Chauraha in Swarup Nagar on June 23, 2004. They stated in their report that around 7.20 pm, two motorcycle-borne persons had shot several rounds on a person driving a car. The two killers managed to disappear in the crowd. 

The injured man was identified as Ashok Sabbarwal, a resident of Nazeerabad. He was declared dead at hospital. Postmortem report revealed that he had received injuries at his head and abdomen. Two accused were arrested by the police in an encounter near Gol Chauraha in Swarup Nagar on June 25, 2004. The police had recovered a country-made pistol and cartridges from their possession. During interrogation, they revealed that one of the competetiors of Sabbarwal had hired them.
