Dhanbad: A local court in Giridih awarded death sentence to a 40-year-old man on Tuesday for raping and murdering a minor girl five years ago. Mathura Yadav had brutally killed the seven-year-old girl after raping her at Baddiha village in Gawan on May 6, 2011.

The court of the district and sessions judge, V Sunil Kumar Singh, also sentenced Mathura's father, Bhikhari Yadav, to two years of imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 for helping her evidence. The girl's grandfather, Ramdeo Sao, in his FIR on May 7 had said she went to the paddy field with him to graze cattle around 7am. "My granddaughter asked me to get mangoes from the nearest trees. Mathura was sitting close to the field drinking toddy juice. He came and took away the girl and told me that he would mangoes for her," Sao had said in his statement to the police.

When the girl did not return in the evening, her family started searching. They found her body near a borewell that was owned by Mathura. Her throat was slit and her face disfigured. The investigating team later found her blood-stained clothes, a knife and an axe near the crime scene. "On the basis of circumstantial evidences and statements given by at least 14 villagers, the court held Mathura as the main accused and awarded him death sentence for murdering the girl, life imprisonment for raping a minor girl and rigorous imprisonment for two years for hiding evidences under sections 302, 376 and 201 of the IPC, respectively.

The court also held Bhikhari accused under Section 201 and awarded him two years' imprisonment and fine of Rs 5,000," said the additional public prosecutor Mahendra Deo. Mathura is in Giridih divisional jail since his arrest in May 2011. His father was arrested on April 9, but he was granted bail on Tuesday, said defence layer Shivkumar Gupta.
