LUDHIANA: Finding a double murder case as the rarest of rare, a local court on Friday handed over death penalty to a resident of Basti Jodhewal after finding him guilty of killing his aunt and cousin five years ago.
Victims - Usha Grover (R) and daughter Heena Grover (L) |
Usha Rani, 55, and her daughter Heena, 21, were found dead in their house in Mohalla Fatehgunj, near Baba Than Singh Chowk, on May 22, 2013. The police had arrested Usha’s nephew Rishu Grover, 30, on the statement of her son Rahul Grover. Police claimed that Rishu wanted to marry Heena and was infuriated when her marriage was fixed with someone else. After committing the murders, Rishu escaped with cash and jewellery, the FIR stated.
During the case hearing, the prosecution and the complainant argued that circumstantial evidence unerringly pointed towards the accused. “The accused had got a butcher’s knife 20 days before the murders and used surgical gloves to commit those. He ruined the family by committing the gruesome crime. If criminals like him were not given death sentence, they would be a menace for others,” the prosecution said. Police had recovered the knife from the banks of Gundha Nullah and stolen cash from his possession. Rishu, however, pleaded innocence. He said Rahul owed him money. “When I asked him to settle accounts, Rahul refused. He implicated me to settle scores with me,” he added. District attorney Ravinder Abrol said the court considered it to be the rarest of rare case. Detailed copy of the judgment was not available till the filing of the report.
