Nagaon: The Hojai sessions court on Wednesday awarded capital punishment to the prime accused in the May 2017 case of gang rape and murder of a 58-year-old school teacher at Jamunamukh in Assam and life imprisonment to his accomplice. The two, Salim Uddin and Mainul Hoque, both carpenters, were arrested a day after the murder was reported and sent to judicial custody. Their conviction under Sections 201, 302 and 376 (A) of the IPC was pronounced by the sessions court on July 24.

The court of additional district and sessions judge N. Senabaya Deori gave the death sentence and slapped a fine of Rs 20,000 on Mainul Hoque, 41. The court showed some leniency to Salim Uddin, 32, in view of the fact that he had opposed raping the victim while she was unconscious and sentenced him to life imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 30,000. The victim, an assistant teacher in a primary school at Jamunamukh in Hojai district, 150km from Guwahati, was on her way home from school when the two carpenters raped and killed her. They then threw her body into the Kolong river, the police said.

"The police got details of the crime from three schoolchildren who were following their teacher back home that day," a source in Hojai police said. The murder of the teacher, who hailed from Kampur in adjoining Nagaon district, had triggered an uproar with thousands of people taking to the streets on June 1, 2017, demanding capital punishment to the culprits.
