The Supreme Court of India overturned the death sentence of a Dashwanth (also spelled Dhasvanth in some reports) convicted for the rape and murder of a child and subsequently ordered his release from prison, finding major flaws in the trial proceedings and evidence that undermined his conviction. The top court held that the prosecution had failed to prove guilt beyond reasonable doubt, which is essential under criminal law, especially in capital punishment cases where the penalty is irreversible. As a result, the convict was acquitted and released, highlighting the judiciary’s strict insistence on fair trial standards and reliable evidence before upholding the death penalty.
