Summary:
A Yamunanagar fast-track court sentenced 24-year-old Rajesh Kumar alias Nirmal to death for the rape and murder of a six-year-old girl on September 20, 2024. The girl, a Class 2 student, went missing while playing with friends, and her body was found in nearby sugarcane fields. Based on eyewitness information, police registered an FIR and arrested the accused. Rajesh Kumar was convicted under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the POCSO Act. In addition to the death penalty, he was fined and sentenced to seven years’ rigorous imprisonment on a separate charge, with all sentences running concurrently. The death sentence is subject to confirmation by the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
